The Heritage Trail Skigersta- Eoropie

This section of the Heritage Trail is situated on the north coast of the Isle of Lewis. From Skigersta to Eoropie, this North Lewis coastal route covers the tip of the island, featuring breath-taking scenery, an abundance of wildlife, and rich cultural heritage as you follow the coastline along this beautiful headland. You can start from either Skigersta, Port of Ness or Eoropie and visit significant landmarks along the way.

As you walk this section of the Heritage Trail you will take in some of North Lewis' most renowned landmarks, full of culture, history and natural beauty.

The Trail

Route description: Skigersta to Eoropie

Start from the end of the Skigersta road, walking along the road towards Eorodale, and take the junction on the second right, down the road towards the coast.

With the harbour on your right you follow the road until you reach a fork in the road with a large wooden sign, turn left until you reach the last house that you can see at the end of the road looking towards the Atlantic. From there you will see the start of the trail on your left. Follow the gravel road, go through the gate and you will find yourself on the marked trail along the coast.

At Stoth beach you will join the road until you reach the lighthouse.

At the fork in the road, take the left and go through the gate, then following the waymarkers along the coast go through the next gate where you join the road again. Walking along this road you come to a junction where you take a right and walk straight down the road to the Port of Ness.

Follow the markers taking in the following highlights; Dùn Èistean, Stoth beach and the Butt of Lewis lighthouse.

Continue to follow the way markers while keeping the sea on your right-hand side until you reach Traigh Shanndaigh where the trail ends. Just before Traigh Shanndaigh, you will go past a memorial, dedicated to fishermen who lost their lives close to the beach. You can also walk along the road back to Port of Ness.

Route description: Eoropie to Skigersta

Starting from Eoropie Dunes Playpark, you will see the sign for the start of the trail. Follow the path, through the small gate to Traigh Shanndaigh and on reaching the beach, go through the gate on your right. Head for the coast and you will shortly see a memorial dedicated to fishermen who lost their lives.

When you reach the lighthouse, walk along the road until you reach Stoth beach. From here, the path follows the coast, over lazy beds, passing the historical site of Dùn Èistean and eventually reaching Port of Ness, looking to the harbour and beach.

Continue along the road until you reach the gate on your left, walk along the coast towards Eorodale and up through the village, then take a left at the crossroads and continue straight on until you reach Skigersta road end to finish your walk.

Carry along the path, following the marker posts while keeping the coast on your left-hand side. You will pass alongside Cunndal beach, walk on top of the eye of the Butt and then continue to the Butt of Lewis lighthouse.

Continue straight ahead along the road, taking your second left back down towards the coast.
